The first meeting of CTM class
was a great day for me as a student and as new educator as well. I was excited and
nervous at the same time to meet everyone so I came too early. I thought the professor
in this class is too old and too serious that could give tension or pressure,
but it was a relief that Dr. Son is fun to be with while learning in a formal
class setting. I am also having fun and learning from my classmates during
discussions or simply sharing their own thoughts and experiences in the
teaching ministry, formal or non-formal setting. What a learning experience and
environment it is! Overall impression, it was great. I really love CTM class!
I learned new things and I should say it widens my
perspective on the role of the teachers. As a teacher I am not just an
instructor, but also facilitator and counselor. We also discussed in the first
meeting the difference of Youth and Adult learning style. And indeed there is a big difference. Dr. Son ended the class with an inspirational video entitled
the heart of the teacher.
Now, as I reflected on the things I’ve learned from the
first meeting in CTM class, my first question is that, how would I be able to
use these in my teaching ministry. First, as Christian educator I must
know my role in the lives of my students, knowing them deeply would be the
demand so that I could make sense in every lessons to their daily lives. Secondly,
as Christian educator I must know how to execute some creative teaching
styles/techniques according to my student's age because there are differences in
the learning style of children, youth and adult. Based on the differences of
adult and youth learning style, as a teacher I should know what methodologies
I’m going to use. And lastly, what strike me the most in the video, as a teacher I
should have a big heart in creating patiently a work of art within my students, and to achieve that i should create first a good learning environment, an environment that they will never be afraid to express themselves.
Let's us pray that we, along with the learners in the ministry, are ready for "adult learning" or "andragogy" method. Let's remember Hebrews 5:12 that says,
